Have you heard about the lost Rembrandt? Learn more in Out of the Shadows

Long thought to be the work of a student, the painting Old Man with a Beard has recently been attributed to Rembrandt van Rijn himself.

This groundbreaking discovery is one of the primary focal points of Kevin Sullivan’s new documentary, Out of the Shadows. Out of the Shadows follows researcher Ernst van de Wetering and his colleagues as they work to learn the truth about Old Man with a Beard. The film explains each element of the process, and takes the viewer behind the scenes to explore the fascinating overlap between art history and science.

“Old Man with a Beard” was celebrated in Amsterdam this week, both at a special ceremony at the Euronext Amsterdam Stock Exchange, and at the Rembrandt House. van de Wetering gave a special presentation explaining the attribution process, and the scientific techniques used to confirm the painting’s authenticity.

Costumes for a Classic: Clothing from the Sullivan film, “Lantern Hill” can be yours!

Costumes for a Classic: Clothing from the Sullivan film, “Lantern Hill” can be yours!

Few would deny that L.M. Montgomery had a way with words. The author’s ability to convey the landscape and feeling of a scene is part of what has given novels like Anne of Green Gables such lasting appeal. When Kevin Sullivan began adapting Montgomery’s novel Lantern Hill for the screen, he knew that he would have to focus on the details in order to bring her words to life on film. As Kevin is known to say, “the devil is in the details”!

This attention to detail led to the choice to have Martha Mann create the costumes for Lantern Hill

Mann, having created the beautiful costumes for Anne of Green Gables and Anne: The Sequel, has a reputation for her painstaking research and careful attention to every aspect of costumes. For the winter scenes in this film, Mann created this gorgeous cloak that was worn by the actress Gloria Gage.  Made from forest-green wool and trimmed with rabbit fur, this piece is both true to the period of the story and to Montgomery’s literary creation.  In keeping with her standards, rather than the typical ‘film costume’ fabrics, Mann used only high-quality materials.  The cape features a hood and an extended shawl collar, which makes this garment as warm and cozy as it is lovely on the screen.

Most importantly, this piece can be yours! Sullivan Entertainment recently opened up their vast collection of costumes to the public. This piece was gently used during filming, then carefully stored, before being carefully cleaned to be ready to be worn now.

This holiday season, this cape from Lantern Hill will make a perfect gift for the literature fan, movie buff, or stylish fashionista on your gift list.

Introducing Kevin Sullivan’s Latest Film: Out of the Shadows

Great news! Kevin’s Sullivan’s latest film,  Out of the Shadows, is now available for purchase on ShopatSullivan.com.

The film explores numerous recent important discoveries using advanced scientific technologies that have been applied to centuries-old masterpieces. Following a tremendous team of scientists and art historians around the world, Sullivan has been able to uncover mysteries behind some of the art world’s great paintings and objets d’arts.

Using cutting edge technology such as an atomic particle accelerator and x-ray tomography, Sullivan’s scientific colleagues were able to locate hidden masterpieces present beneath existing works. Here, science allows art historians to probe the artist’s psyche to answer the perplexing question of why an artist would choose to paint over their own masterpiece. Furthermore, new information allows art historians to conclusively verify the artist behind several works – showing them to be not the work of students as originally thought, but by the masters themselves.

The film explores a number of mysteries from looking for a piece of the cross Christ in a medieval altar in a museum in Rotterdam, to extracting several hidden masterworks by van Gogh and Rembrandt – then reproducing the hidden paintings in digital reproductions.

The documentary is narrated by Donald Sutherland (M*A*S*H, Pride and Prejudice, The Hunger Games, The Italian Job, Pillars of the Earth), who guides the viewer carefully through museums, underground laboratories, churches and cloisters to examine the amazing revelations presented in the film.

Be sure to check out the brand new Out of the Shadows website, where you can learn more about the art featured in the film, the scientists involved, and experience the augmented reality feature, which allows users to independently control their exploration of a microscopic 15th century prayer nut from Holland’s Rijksmuseum that is featured in the film.
